Working in Europe: The Routes Actually Open to Kenyan Professionals
“Working in Europe” is not one route. It is a dozen national systems, each with its own shortage list, its own language expectations and its own processing reality. Knowing which door is actually open to your profile saves months.
Malta — the fastest-moving hospitality and services route
Malta recruits heavily from Kenya for hospitality, care work, cleaning, logistics and construction support roles. English is the working language, which removes the single biggest barrier Kenyan applicants face elsewhere in Europe. Employers issue a job offer, the employer or agent files for the single permit, and the applicant travels once it is approved. Expect a realistic timeline of three to six months from offer to departure.
Poland, Romania and Croatia — manufacturing and logistics
Central and Eastern European employers recruit for factory, warehouse, packing, food-processing and construction roles. Entry-level packages are modest by Western European standards but come with accommodation and a clear legal status, and they build the EU work history that later applications rely on.
Germany and Portugal — nursing, engineering and technical trades
Germany runs the most structured skilled-worker route in Europe, and it rewards preparation: recognised qualifications, and in nursing, German at B1–B2 before registration. That is a real investment, but the outcome is a regulated profession with long-term settlement prospects. Portugal has emerged as a more accessible entry point for technical trades and hospitality.
United Kingdom and Ireland — health and social care
The UK Health and Care Worker route and Irish employment permits remain the strongest options for Kenyan nurses and care assistants. They require a licensed sponsor, professional registration where applicable, and English-language evidence. They are also the routes where unlicensed intermediaries cause the most harm — a sponsor that cannot be verified on the public register is not a sponsor.
One rule applies everywhere: if you cannot verify the employer and the sponsoring entity independently, the offer is not an offer. We check the register before we present any vacancy to a client.
